DID YOU KNOW?

  • 23.05.2012 | All about chopsticks

Chopsticks are short, conical sticks traditionally used as cutlery in most of Asia. They are the most popular type of cutlery in the world, used by over 2 billion people. Chopsticks are mainly made of wood, bamboo or plastic, less commonly of steel. Some sticks are even sculpted in ivory.

    HOW TO USE CHOPSTICKS :

Put your hand in a position ready for a handshake.

    1. Place the first chopstick in the bend between the thumb and the index finger

    2. Place the second chopstick on the tip of your thumb and the index finger

    3. Lean your ring finger against the first (bottom) chopstick

    4. Place your middle finger below the second (upper) chopstick. Moving the second chopstick up and down you will be able to pinch food with the two chopsticks.

    HOW NOT TO USE CHOPSTICKS

    1. Playing with chopsticks is a sign of bad manners (similarly to playing with food in the European culture).
    2. You must not stick chopsticks into the bowl with food.
    3. You must not use chopsticks to move plates or bowls with food.
    4. You must not turn the the thicker end of chopsticks towards the food.

DISPOSABLE CHOPSTICKS AND PROTECTION OF ENVIRONMENT

The country where disposable chopsticks are most commonly used is Japan: over 24 billion chopsticks are used a year, which amounts to 200 pairs per one Japanese. In China, 45 billion disposable chopsticks are used a year, which means 25 million trees need to be cut down.  The current trend in Japan is to use reusable chopsticks and this has given rise to a sort of fashion for "my chopsticks".
